The City of Mitchellville is providing an update regarding recent water system capacity concerns.
As a precautionary measure, the City issued a water conservation request to residents and businesses prior to any supply disruption. This step was taken proactively to protect reserves in the water tower and reduce strain on the system while production levels were being monitored. The conservation notice was intended to ensure adequate reserve capacity and maintain system stability.
Yesterday evening, the pump on Well 3 failed. City staff immediately began coordinating emergency pump service and worked to adjust system operations while awaiting repair.
In the interim, production from another well was evaluated. That well was not producing water at the quality levels required for distribution and was not placed into service.
Emergency pump crews responded early this morning and successfully replaced the pump on Well 3. That well is now back online, though overall system production remains below normal levels while additional repairs and maintenance continue.
Crews are currently working on Well 1, where the pump is being replaced and maintenance, including cleaning of filters and intake screens, is being completed. Once that work is finalized and the well is returned to service, overall capacity is expected to improve.
At this time, there is no issue with the quality of water being distributed to residents. The public water supply remains safe. The situation has been related to mechanical and production capacity challenges — not contamination of the system.
Residents and businesses are asked to continue conserving water to help maintain adequate pressure and protect water tower reserves while full production capacity is restored.
Hy-Vee has generously donated bottled water for residents. Distribution is at the Mitchellville Community Center-Please enter through North Doors. This bottled water is being provided to offer alternatives while conservation efforts are in place — not because of any water safety concerns.
The City’s water team and emergency repair crews have been working diligently to restore full operations. We appreciate the community’s cooperation and patience.
Further updates will be provided as progress continues.
